Manhattan has several nicknames: The Little Apple, MHK, Manhappenin’, and Manhappiness. ‘The Little Apple’ is a play on Manhattan, New York City.
Manhattan extends into Pottawatomie County. It’s located in northeastern Kansas at the junction of the Kansas River and Big Blue River.
Manhattan is best known as the home of Kansas State University with approximately 24,000 students and has a distinct college town atmosphere. Fort Riley, a United States Army post, is located 8 miles west of Manhattan.
Manhattan is also the birthplace of Damon Runyon, the “Inventor of Broadway,” and his Manhattan house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Downtown Manhattan, and the Manhattan Town Center Mall, are an anchor for shopping, art, fine dining, and entertainment in eastern Manhattan.
